Dog names through the years

Puppy names from A to Z, it can be any name. Maybe you want to name your dog after someone you love, appreciate, adore… It is all okay! Especially nowadays, you can literally name your dog whatever you want. Dog name trends show that dog owners get more and more creative. There used to be a time where calling your dog ‘dog’ was completely normal. Or giving each new dog in the family the same name as the dog before him, and the dog before him, and before him… In those cases, the dog was usually more of a working animal than a pet. Just like farmers used to own horses as working animals! Dogs have been around for quite awhile now but as you might now, mankind created them. Or at least made them domestic. Nowadays you rarely see wild dogs but you would be surprised by the number of stray dogs living across the world. The estimated number of dogs across the world is around 1 billion dogs. Of course it can not be said precisely because there are so many strays. Only 17% of the dogs are being kept as pet, which might be a bit shocking. Sadly, not everywhere around the world dogs are being treated and cared for the way they should. We are sure that you will welcome your new dog into a lovely and caring home and hope that it will be a friendship for life! So yes, of course your new furry friend deserves a beautiful name.

Famous dog names from history

As we said, dogs have been a man’s best friend for quite a while now. Beautiful movies have been made about the relationship between human and dog, showing just how special it can be. Throughout the years, many beautiful stories have been made and many legends are still going around as well. Some you might know, others not so much.

A first example that will sound familiar is of course about the Japanese Akita, Hachiko. Hachiko’s story is a beautiful one, which you might know from the movie but it is based on a true story! Hachi used to pick up his owner from the train station in Tokyo every day. When his owner passed away, Hachi kept waiting. Never leaving the station. Later, when Hachi got old and eventually passed away. A statue of him was made and put in his place, which really shows just how a special a dog can be.

A story that is a bit similar to Hachi’s but maybe less familiar is the story of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier from Edinburgh. This dog watched over his owner’s grave for years, until he passed away himself.

Another beautiful example of how heroic dogs can be is that of the St Bernard, Barry der Menschenretter. Barry worked as a mountain rescue dog and saved the lives of over 40 people.

The importance of a name

Just like we attach a lot of value to our own name, as it forms a bit of our personality as well, we can also attach a lot of value to our dog’s name. Which is beautiful and can really show the bond you have together. But you do have to realize that your dog will not realize this meaning as much as you do. To your dog, his name will always be a command. It will be the sound that lets him know he has to pay attention and then a new command will follow. This is why it is so important to train this well. Teaching your puppy his name can be done easily with the right attention. Do not underestimate the importance of it because who has to sit, lie down or stay? Exactly, your puppy. In order for him to do this right, he will need to know that his name is his first as well. Our online puppy training can help you a lot. It contains a complete step-by-step guide on teaching your puppy his name and also explains the importance of teaching a puppy his name. Definitely worth to check out!

Besides thinking about what you like, if there is a beautiful story behind the name, if it suits your puppy’s personality and all of that, it is also good to think about some other importances. Different studies show that some letters or consonants are being processed better by dogs than others. For example the letter ‘s’, which is often quite a harsh sound, is a good one. Hard sounds activate more sound receptors in a dog’s brain than soft consonants. This is something you could take in consideration when practicing your possible names out loud as well. Maybe you are always saying the ‘r’ very clearly and a bit hard as well, then it could be a good letter to use in your dog’s name. Practicing out loud is a very good idea when it comes to picking dog names. When saying the names out loud you will realize if the name sounds clear enough, if you are able to pronounce it in any possible situation and if it suits your dog or not. Maybe you are calling the name out loud and looking at your puppy at the same time and realize that it does not match at all! Than at least you can keep looking instead of dwelling on that possible name. Do not make it too hard on yourself and stick to names that are short, clear and simple. After all, dog names are just like commands! Every command we teach our dogs are short and clear terms as well so stick to something simple.

If you have more dogs in the house already, keep this in mind as well. It sounds lovely to name three dogs Kelly, Shelly and Milly but the differences in those names are so small that it will be really hard for all three dogs to know which one you want to call. It is better to pick names that sound rather different from one another so you are not confusing any of the dogs when training the new name.
